Karita’s Story:

I was 17 when I started smoking.  Everyone else was doing it including both my parents.  I knew I was

addicted when I snuck into the high school bathroom to smoke.  I smoked a half a pack to a pack a day

before I quit for good.

It took me several times to quit before I quit for good.  I always knew that it was good to quit for the kids

and that I’d be in better shape.  I was finally convinced that quitting was good for everyone, but most

importantly for me.  When I quit for good, it was on the fourth of July back in 2006 and I was with family

all day.  I felt that if I can make it through the day with family without smoking, I can make it through anything.

Even though there are lots of reasons to quit smoking, you have to want to quit smoking for yourself.  You

have a pick a quit date and have a hobby to keep you busy.  Things that helped me quit included chewing

a lot of gum and brushing my teeth after every meal.  I did things to get my mind off of the cravings and

kept active.  Now, I am addicted to exercising.
